It is both a magnificently engineered classic and a work of epic proportions in its factual content and the implications of the scientific truths detailed within. The images conjured up in my mind while reading this book played across my senses as if I were watching a magnificent BBC documentary.
Not only is Emperor of All Maladies an extremely professional work of science, providing a significant amount of scientific truth, focused primarily on cancer and genetics—but it is also a beautiful work of literature that pulls on the reader’s heartstrings, stirring unexpectedly deep physical and emotional reactions.
How could such a writer exist? How can someone so extraordinarily intertwine the magic of literature with the truth of science? Siddhartha Mukherjee is an unusual breed—a well-trained oncologist with rich literary knowledge, an understanding heart, and a likable writing style. Crafting a book like this would have been a nearly impossible task had the author not had considerable scientific knowledge and wonderful writing skills...
